Development of the Majestic Fantasy RPG, Part 1

I just shipped off the draft for my Scourge of the Demon Wolf, 2nd edition, to my editor, and I am resuming work on my next major project, the full version of the Majestic Fantasy RPG.

For those who don't know, I started publishing on my own by releasing Supplement VI: The Majestic Wilderlands. Not only was it a setting overview of my Majestic Wilderlands, but it was also a supplement adding classes and other rules to Swords & Wizardry, Core Rules circa 2009.
Since then, I've used it in various campaigns, and by the mid-2010s, it had become a complete system in its own right. Still compatible with Swords & Wizardry.

I realized many of you already have a favorite edition or clone, and that more of you opt to run your campaign using a kitbash of your favorite subsystems. While the Majestic Fantasy RPG is a complete RPG in its own right, I also designed it so that it is easy to pull apart so you can use as much or as little of it as you want in your own campaign. To help with this, the text will feature numerous Rob's Notes that explain why certain sections work the way they do.

The Northern Marches is a 320-by-400-mile fantasy sandbox covering the lands around the western end of the Grey Sea. It includes the Wild North, Blackmarsh, the Southlands, the conquered Viking realm of Vasa, the Duchy of Northport, and the strange Ring Islands.

The setting is spread across four 12" by 18" maps using 5-mile hexes. Throughout the guidebook are settlements, ruins, lairs, tribes, realms, factions, NPCs, and local history intended to give you enough detail to start running a campaign while still leaving enough room to make the setting your own.

While the digital version comes with all the maps and files you need to begin using the Northern Marches, you can get the poster maps or the map booklet separately as print products. Note that the digital files for both are included in the Guidebook product being offered, as you will see below.

Guidebook PDFs
You get two versions of the Northern Marches Guidebook: one optimized for reading on a tablet or phone and a larger version suitable for printing at home.

Markdown Document
The complete text of the Guidebook is included in Markdown format and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license. You can use, modify, and build on the material for your own projects under the terms of the license.

Reference PDFs
Six reference PDFs summarize the rules, charts, travel information, encounters, and other material found throughout the Guidebook. This also includes the current version of the Merchant Adventure rules for the Majestic Fantasy RPG.

Rob's Note: All poster maps are designed to be printed at 12" by 18".

Player and Referee Maps

High-resolution JPGs of the poster maps are included in both player and referee versions, along with the town maps used throughout the Northern Marches.

Layered Map PDFs

The complete Northern Marches map is also included as nearly 24" by 36" layered PDFs in both player and referee versions. By turning layers on and off, you can create customized map views for your own campaign.

Editable SVG Map
The Northern Marches map is included as an SVG file usable with Inkscape, CorelDraw, Affinity, Adobe Illustrator, and other programs that support SVG. This allows you to edit the map and create your own version of the Northern Marches.

High-Resolution Print Maps

Shipping poster maps can get expensive, especially outside the United States. So the package includes the high-resolution files used to print the four 12" by 18" maps. You can take them to a local print shop and have your own copies made.

Map Booklet

Sometimes a letter-sized book of maps is easier to manage at the table than four large poster maps. The four maps have been divided into 25 overlapping letter-sized areas and assembled into a map booklet. The booklet also includes reference sheets, a visual index, terrain indices, and locale registers for the Northern Marches.
