That's fascinating. I was not aware of that. It would be very interesting to see Tolkien's process.
I know I've seen Tolkien's time records mentioned somewhere before. I mean, he had to keep track of where everybody was at what time so he could have people see the outcomes of things other people were doing, while he was writing events on each side of the river as separate "books" with no intercutting.
