Jeff in this post has a problem of finding an iconic image of Leather armor. His plate is spot on being an image from Excalibur, and while his Monty Python Holy Grail pic seems like a goofy choice for chain. Their costuming has always been spot on for a period look.
For leather (and even chain) I need to look no further than Robin of Sherwood. This British series remains for me the iconic Robin Hood on the screen. And there is leather armor galore. As well as chain if you look at the nobles and the sheriff's men.
Man, loved that show. Especially any scene involving Herne the hunter.
ReplyDeleteHank the ranger from the D&D cartoon for me. As a little kid, I'd never encountered the leather armor concept before then, so of course it make an impression.
ReplyDeleteAh, Robin of Sherwood.
ReplyDeleteMmm...Judi Trott...I'll rescue her.
Fantastic show!
ReplyDeleteGood picture too, includes good examples of studded leather and hide armor :)
Woo hoo shout out to the best Robin Hood ever.
ReplyDeleteReally though, all the guards would have needed to wear was a 6" steel plate in the center of their chest and their back and the sheriff would have saved himself a lot of guards.
That show was great! Then Connery jr. showed up.
ReplyDeleteI have the complete series on dvd and love it but that is not leather armor. Al is right about 1 example of studded and 1 example of hide but there is a huge difference between wearing some supple leather as clothing and real ac lowering leather armor. Check out Robin and Marian for some great padded, chain and scale armor examples.
